A True Example Of A Global Classroom – Madame Varela Teaches 3/4J French Via Google Hangouts

Thank You Madame Varela For Giving Your Time To Teach 3/4J French

After a chance connection I have been so blessed to meet the most generous and educated lady we know as Madame Varela.

Kati is a language teacher located in Sydney, 3/4J are a class of students eager to learn about the world. Put the two together and a magical connection has formed where students are engaged each week learning French via technology. Kati began earlier in the year skyping the students every Monday. The class have now moved to google hangouts, where Kati has the technology to provide online resources for the students, to view and enhance their learning.

The class have French exercise books and participate actively just like a normal lesson in their classroom. Today was the final day of term and Kati called in to run an additional lesson this week with the class. Normally most children would not turn up as the day finishes early but last night they were reminded that Kati would call them in the morning. All were early and eagerly waiting in front of the interactive whiteboard waiting for the call.

We are so thankful for this opportunity and it is so pleasing to see the children remember and recall a new language they have never been exposed to until this year.

Too many teachers are scared of technology or lack skills in how they can connect it to the curriculum. Engaging students means finding resources that will stimulate student learning and find a purpose for these children to be at school. Too many children know little about the world and spend most of their time gaming and engaging in social media. If we as teachers can bring the world into our classrooms hopefully our students can learn and find out what a big world is out their for them to explore.

It is my pleasure to share a bit of my passion with you!!!

I recently watched this TED Talk called ‘How to Buy Happiness’ (http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_norton_how_to_buy_happiness?language=en) and read this short article ‘The Happiest People Pursue the Most Difficult Problems’ (https://hbr.org/2013/04/to-find-happiness-at-work-tap/) and they both confirm what I feel when I teach: we are happiest when doing things for others instead for just ourselves. So I am just as grateful to have met you and see you every week!

You have offered me the opportunity to try out lots of tech tools and see how effective or otherwise they have been. You have been incredibly patient when I make mistakes, go too slow or too fast and I truly appreciate that. In fact, I can honestly say I have learned so much from you as well!!!

So my turn to say THANKS, merci, gracias… to YOU!

    À bientôt!

    Kati
