June POM

In this photo, Chubat (right), 12 years old, sits with her friend in the burned ruins of her school, which used to serve 470 students. The facility was destroyed by fighting in February 2016. Before the attack, Chubat and her friend would go to school every day.

In late May 2016, leaders from around the world came together in Istanbul, Turkey for the World Humanitarian Summit. At this conference, global leaders launched a new initiative called Education Cannot Wait, which is a fund for education in emergencies. During crises, like the conflict in South Sudan, only 2% of humanitarian funding goes to education. The Education Cannot Wait initiative will provide resources to ensure that children like Chubat and her friend can continue to learn during wars and natural disasters.
